The kōwhaiwhai are traditional Aotearoa (New Zealand) Māori patterns that are used in whakairo (carving) and art to enhance storytelling. Traditionally found in Marae meeting houses, carved onto waka (canoe), paddles, store houses and more, they are now also included in many contemporary art forms, often utilised by clothing designers of Māori descent.
